Stone quality
Every skipping stone has one of four qualities. It is set when you pick the stone up and shown in its tooltip.
Better stones are a trade-off: they fly faster, but the green zone on the power meter shrinks, so they are harder to throw well.
| Stone | Power meter | Speed | Green release | Yellow release |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Chipped | green 30% | ×0.7 | 10 skips, 18.7 blocks | 7 skips, 9.1 blocks |
Rough | green 22.7% | ×0.9 | 11 skips, 24.7 blocks | 8 skips, 12.4 blocks |
Smooth | green 15.3% | ×1.1 | 12 skips, 30.7 blocks | 9 skips, 15.7 blocks |
Perfect | green 8% | ×1.35 | 13 skips, 38.3 blocks | 10 skips, 19.9 blocks |
The results assume a perfect aim. See the math for how aim, timing and quality combine.
What quality changes
- Speed. The stone's speed multiplies the power of your throw. The first skip is longer, and since each skip is a fixed fraction of the one before, a longer first skip also means more skips in total.
- Green zone width. The green zone narrows evenly from the worst stone to the best. A Perfect stone's green zone is almost four times smaller than a Chipped one's.
Quality does not change the red or yellow zones. A red release sinks whatever the stone.
Even a miss pays off
A Perfect stone released in the yellow still goes about as far as a Chipped stone released in the green.
Getting better stones
Quality is rolled from odds that depend on the biome. See Finding stones for the full table. Stones of different qualities do not stack together.
